Building Self Esteem In Children - 3 Don'ts For Parents

Children self esteem has a significant bearing on how well they are doing in life as well as responding towards every person whom they met in every situation in their daily lives. How they see themselves will greatly influence their characters, attitudes and behaviors.

Here are the 3 don'ts that every parent must know if you want to develop kids self esteem:

Avoid comparing with others
Avoid making comparison between your children and other children from both inside and outside of your family members. We often see many parents as well as teachers like to compare their children with other kids. They think that this will motivate their children to perform better. But, the fact is that comparing with other kids can magnify their senses of inadequacy and make them feel a low sense of self-worth. This can lead to low self esteem in children.

No negative labeling
Do not put a negative label on your child as such 'slow' or 'lazy' if he is unable to complete or perform a task properly. The more you label your child that he is 'lazy', the more he will see himself as a lazy person and low self-esteem child. Instead, show him the right strategy on how to perform the task better and offer him any help if he needs it.

Do not focus only on weaknesses
Nobody is perfect. Everyone has their own weaknesses and strengths. Parents should not choose to focus only on their children weaknesses. Instead, parents should focus more on children strengths than weaknesses. It is also very important for parents to give the words of praise to their children when they do the right things because this can help in building self esteem in children.

The foundations of your children self esteem are laid early in life. It is essential for parents, especially young parents, to know what can affect children self esteem and what they shouldn't do to their children on the daily basis.
