What Is Self Esteem In Children?

Do you know there is something called self esteem in children? Do you know what self esteem is? Self esteem is something that we can’t see or hear it, but we definately can sense and feel it. Basically, children self esteem is a collection of feelings/beliefs that children have about themselves, either positively or negatively. In scientific terms, self esteem is based upon their internal image or self image that they have in their mind, consciously and subconsciously, wherever they go.

How children develop the self image or self esteem? When children are very young, they develop them based on their interactions with other people and studying how others especially family members, perceive them. If the children get enough encouragement and praise from others, they will begin to develop a sense of pride and self worth, which will later turn them into someone with high self esteem. On the other hand, if children only receive negative reinforcements, they will most likely suffer from low self esteem at later ages.

High self esteem kids are generally happier and more willing to learn new things as compared to those children with low self esteem. As a result, kids who feel good and love about themselves tend to do well in school as well as their lives.

Every child is a special gift of god. Each one has his own unique talents. How children perceive themselves will have great influence on their motivations, attitudes and behaviors, which can impact their future lives. Therefore, parents should play very important and active roles in building self esteem in children, to ensure children are feel loved and valued.
